History of Whalom Park
A quick Overview of Whalom Park’s History
Whalom Park opened in 1893 as a trolley park built by the Fitchburg & Leominster Street Railway Co. and operated until the year 2000. At the time of closing the park was the 13th oldest park operating in the United States. In its 107 years the park played host to many classic rides including four roller coasters. Roller Coaster 1901 to 1924, Shooting Star 1925 to 1938, Kiddie Coaster, The park’s only steel coaster, 1970’s to early 1980’s, and the parks star attraction The Flyer Comet 1940 to 2000 (The coaster stood until 2006). The park also had a number of classic flat rides like the Tumble Bug, Turn Pike, Whip, and many more. But the parks start classic flat was its Carousel. It came to Whalom in 1914 and featured a full menagerie of Charles I. D. Looff carvings that went back as far as 1880. The attraction was a $3,000 investment into the park.
